In December 2023, Kintech Engineering donated measurement equipment including our Suntrust 360 data logger and sensors to the Nyangatom Mission: a solar pumping system enabling the provision of water both to the mission site itself and to the Nyangatom village located around the mission. Around 10,000 Nyangatom and 5,000 Turkana people live in this area, near the border with Kenya.
The measurement equipment was used for a solar pumping system with 36 photovoltaic modules of 335 Wp, an 11-kW photovoltaic inverter, a 7.5 kW submersible pump from the manufacturer Grundfos, all the necessary metal structure for mounting the photovoltaic modules, as well as the well piping and all auxiliary components.
The mission concluded with a visit from technicians in May 2024 to commission the system and install and configure the Suntrust 360 data logger that allows the recording of data from the photovoltaic installation, as well as data on temperature, wind speed and wind direction as well as humidity, all basic meteorological data for decision-making and weather event prediction in the area.
This mission, led by Fathers Ángel and David, has been established among the Nyangatom since 2014, with a significant presence of the Catholic Church. It is located in a very difficult-to-access area in the south of Ethiopia, at the border with South Sudan and Kenya. The region has very few roads, which are in poor condition, and during the rainy season, they become impassable. Just to reach the mission from Spain takes 2 days, including international flights to the country, domestic flights within the country, and a more than 6-hour drive.
The mission’s goal is to improve access to water for the population, ensure food security through local agricultural training, establish childcare centers, improve animal health, and train locals in areas such as animal health, hygiene, sanitation, agricultural practices, border crossing issues, peace, and conflict resolution between different tribes.
